What Is a Woltman Water Meter?
A Woltman water meter is a mechanical velocity meter built for large flows. Inside the meter, water passes over a helical (screw-shaped) rotor placed in the direction of flow. The faster the water moves, the faster the rotor spins. A gear train transfers this rotation to the register, which displays the total volume that has passed through.
Named after the engineer Reinhard Woltman, who developed the design, this meter type remains the standard for bulk water measurement. Its open flow path creates little pressure loss, which makes it a strong choice for large pipes where the supply must keep moving at high volume. It is widely used wherever clean water is measured in large quantities.
Types of Woltman Water Meters
Horizontal Woltman Meter (WP / WPH)
The rotor axis runs parallel to the pipe. Best for clean water at consistent, high flow rates, and the most common choice for large mains and industrial supply lines.
Vertical Woltman Meter (WS / WSH)
The rotor axis sits at a right angle to the pipe. Suited to varying flows and pipes where water may carry some fine particles, and often chosen for lower-flow accuracy and ease of maintenance.
Cold and Hot Water Models
Cold water meters suit standard supply lines. Hot water versions are available for heated systems and process water.
Woltman Meters with Pulse Output
Selected models include a pulse transmitter for connection to remote reading, SCADA and billing systems.
Key Features & Benefits
- High flow capacity: Handles large volumes in big pipelines
- Low pressure loss: Open design keeps supply pressure up
- Wide size range: Available for medium to very large pipe diameters
- Robust construction: Cast iron or ductile iron body, built for tough conditions
- Flanged connections: Secure installation in standard pipework
- Dry dial register: Sealed from water for a clear, protected display
- Removable measuring insert: Easy servicing and repair on many models
- Pulse output option: Supports remote reading and monitoring
Applications
- Municipal water supply: Distribution mains and district metered areas (DMAs)
- Industrial plants: Process, cooling and boiler feed water
- Irrigation and agriculture: Farms, canals and pumping stations
- Water treatment plants: Inlet and outlet monitoring
- Large buildings and campuses: Main supply metering for universities, hospitals and complexes
- Construction and infrastructure projects: Large site supply
- Bulk supply and tanker filling: Measuring high-volume water delivery
- Housing developments: Master metering for communities and estates
How to Choose the Right Woltman Water Meter
Pipe size. Match the meter’s nominal size to your pipeline and connection.
Flow range. Choose a meter whose normal flow sits within its best accuracy range, not simply the largest meter that fits the pipe. An oversized meter can under-read at low flows.
Flow pattern. Steady, high flow suits horizontal types. Variable flow often suits vertical types.
Water temperature. Select a cold or hot water model.
Water quality. Woltman meters need reasonably clean water. Fit a strainer upstream where sand or debris could damage the rotor.
Installation space. Check the face-to-face length, orientation and straight pipe requirements.
Reading method. Decide between a standard register and a pulse output version for remote reading.
Pressure rating. Confirm the meter’s PN rating matches your system.
Not sure which fits? Send us your pipe size, flow data and application and we will recommend the right model.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Woltman water meter used for?
It measures large volumes of clean water in big pipelines, such as municipal mains, industrial supply lines, irrigation systems and bulk supply points.
How does a Woltman water meter work?
Water flows over a helical rotor and makes it spin. The rotation speed is proportional to the flow, and the register converts it into a volume reading.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical Woltman meters?
In a horizontal meter, the rotor is parallel to the flow, which suits steady, high flows. In a vertical meter, the rotor is perpendicular to the flow, which gives better low-flow performance and suits variable demand.
What sizes are available?
Woltman meters are commonly made for pipe sizes from about DN40 up to DN300 or larger. Tell us your pipe size and we will confirm available options.
Can a Woltman meter measure hot water?
Yes. Hot water models are available, so tell us your maximum operating temperature when you enquire.
Do I need straight pipe sections?
Yes. Woltman meters perform best with undisturbed flow, so straight pipe lengths upstream and downstream improve accuracy. We can advise based on your layout.
Can Woltman meters be read remotely?
Models with a pulse output can connect to remote reading, SCADA and billing systems.
Can it handle dirty water?
Not well. Sand, silt and debris can damage the rotor. Use a strainer, or consider a different meter type for dirty water.
Do you supply in bulk?
Yes. We supply single replacements, bulk quantities and complete project orders.
